Rock Out With Metallica’s Performance of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ in Curitiba, Brazil
Though it had been around for several years before, "Whiskey in the Jar" first started getting international attention when it was recorded and performed by The Dubliners, an Irish folk band from the '60s. In 1962, the song was featured as the B-side of The Highwaymen's single for "I'm on My Way" as well as on their album, Encore. A decade later, Thin Lizzy popularized it, and then in 1990, The Dubliners took another stab at the traditional folk track alongside The Pogues.
And in 1998, arguably the most popular and familiar version of "Whiskey in the Jar" was released by Metallica, who covered it for the first disc of Garage Inc. The song was released as the second official single from the double album, later earning them a Grammy in 2000 for Best Hard Rock Performance.
On Nov. 17, 1998, Metallica debuted their cover onstage at The Warehouse in Toronto at a show that featured nothing but cover songs. Since then, they've only performed it another 79 times to date.
Most recently, they pulled it out at Estádio Couto Pereira in Curitiba, Brazil, on May 7, and now they've released the live video of the performance—check it out below.
