Rodrigo y Gabriela Cover ‘Orion’ with Robert Trujillo – Video of the Week
A musical team that began their partnership as part of a thrash metal band in Mexico City, Rodrigo y Gabriela are a duo that sounds like few other acts out there. Utilizing their roots in thrash metal, the two musicians jam on acoustic guitars with very fast rhythms. At first it might not seem like Rodrigo y Gabriela are Metallica fans, but watching the video below, there's absolutely no question that the legendary rock band has a special place in the Mexican duo's hearts.
Beginning in thrash metal, Rodrigo y Gabriela carry that same type of intensity when they play their acoustic guitars. In fact, Metallica are just one of several metal acts that have had a significant influence on their style, others including Slayer and Testament. On their debut self-titled album, Rodrigo y Gabriela included two covers, one being the legendary Led Zeppelin tune, 'Stairway to Heaven,' and the other being Metallica's instrumental, 'Orion.' Covering the 'Tallica track with only their acoustic guitars, it should come as no surprise that 'Orion' is one of their most popular songs.
With Metallica being a big influence on them and 'Orion' being such a popular song, it would only make sense that eventually the two acts would meet on-stage. On Oct. 16, 2009, at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, Rodrigo y Gabriela welcomed a very special guest to the stage, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. With the bass being a very important part of 'Orion,' Trujillo's presence on-stage took the song to a whole new level.
