When you think of Metallica and cover songs, certain bands immediately pop into your head: The Misfits, Motorhead and Black Sabbath, just to name a few. A band you might not think of is actually responsible for one of Metallica's most popular cover songs. Originally released in 1974, Queen's 'Stone Cold Crazy' has turned into a staple in Metallica's deep cover catalog.
Part of the first disc of 'Garage Inc.,' 'Whiskey in the Jar' became an immediate favorite among fans. Covering the traditional Irish song, Metallica put their hard rock spin on the tune, and on March 16, 1999, they put their hard rock spin on the music video, too.
Metallica released the five song covers album ‘The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited’ in 1987. Almost a decade later, the band had added several more cover songs to their repertoire, and the original E.P. was long out of print. They decided to put together a double album of cover tunes.
Directed by Jonas Akerlund in Los Angeles, the music video for 'Turn the Page,' Metallica's first single from 'Garage Inc.,' made it's worldwide premiere on Oct. 28, 1998. Prior to filming 'Turn the Page,' Akerlund worked with the likes of Madonna, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones, in addition to several other internationally recognized recording artists.
