Stone Sour Unveil Cover of Metallica’s ‘Creeping Death’
Stone Sour are set to unleash their covers EP Meanwhile in Burbank in time for Record Store Day on Saturday (April 18). One of the tracks they cover is Metallica‘s “Creeping Death,” and you can check out the full audio above.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Stone Sour guitarist Josh Rand says Metallica are his favorite band. “Back in ’91, on the Black Album tour, I saw Metallica three times in two weeks!” Rand exclaims. He and bandmate Corey Taylor would go to Metallica shows together. Taylor says, “We wanted to show our respect for our influences with these covers, and it wouldn’t be complete without Metallica.”
Rand started as a bassist and modeled himself after Jason Newsted, down to the side-shaved haircut. “The hardest part about making this EP for me was picking a Metallica song,” Rand, says. “When I switched to guitar, I learned every song that they had written at that point.”
They finally decided on “Creeping Death,” which is from Metallica’s 1984 album Ride the Lightning. “‘Creeping Death’ is an absolute crusher!” Taylor says. “I hope we did it justice.”
Recorded at Room 237 in Burbank, Calif., the rest of the songs on Meanwhile in Burbank include Stone Sour’s take on Alice in Chains’ “We Die Young,” Judas Priest’s “Heading Out to the Highway,” KISS’ “Love Gun and Black Sabbath’s “Children of a Grave.”
