Metallica Unleash Studio Demo Version of New Song ‘Lords of Summer’

Metallica fans around the world rejoiced on March 16 as the legendary rock band unveiled their first new song since the ‘Beyond Magnetic‘ EP was released in 2011. ‘Lords of Summer’ debuted in Bogota, Colombia as the sixth song in the band’s set. Now, just a few days later, fans have been blessed with not only the opportunity to own the live performance but also the ‘Garage Demo Version’ of ‘Lords of Summer’ (listen above) straight from Metallica themselves.

As with all of their live shows, Metallica have offered up the entire Bogota show as a digital download via their website. Along with the ability to purchase each individual song, fans can grab the entire set which comes packaged with the bonus demo version of the new track.

While the first introduction for most of the world to ‘Lords of Summer’ came in the form of a cell-phone video, fans are now able to fully consume what the new song truly sounds like. Nearly eight-and-a-half minutes long, ‘Lords of Summer’ starts with a slow, nearly sludgy, crescendo of guitars and drums. About 45 seconds in, though, the pace quickly changes and the song takes on a life of its own that doesn’t let up.

While this shouldn’t be considered the official studio version of the song, the ‘Garage Demo Version’ (recorded at Metallica HQ in San Rafael, Calif.) certainly sounds good enough to give fans a glimpse into what the future of Metallica might hold. It is not known if ‘Lords of Summer’ will make it onto the next ‘Tallica studio album.

If you’re not ready to shell out the money to download the Bogota set, don’t worry, you can stream the ‘Garage Demo Version’ of ‘Lords of Summer’ above. Crank it up and hit play!
