Metallica Classic ‘Master of Puppets’ Remixed With ‘St. Anger’ Snare Drum Sound

As much as they have defended the highly produced and distorted snare sounds used on their 2003 album St. Anger, there is definitely a reason Metallica never revisited that technique again. A YouTube user named data_dreams 2000 recently took Metallica’s 1986 classic “Master of Puppets” and replaced all the snare hits with the infamous St. Anger snare drum. Take a listen in the player above to hear what the song would sound like with the jarring Lars Ulrich St. Anger drum sound.

Endlessly debated and widely regarded as their worst album (aside from  ‘Lulu,’ their collaboration with Lou Reed), St. Anger was a departure for the band with its raw production style, most notably the much-discussed snare sound. It also captured a turbulent period in the band’s history, with the departure of bassist Jason Newsted and fronman James Hetfield’s battle with addiction, all of which was showcased in the documentary Some Kind of Monster.

YouTube user data_dreams 2000 recently posted the track with the caption, “I was bored, so I replaced all the snare hits with the St. Anger snaredrum. You’re welcome.” While we are not so thankful, it is good to hear to appreciate the classic Metallica song the way it was meant to be heard on the 1986 album Master of Puppets.

Recently some Metallica fans recorded the entire St. Anger album with conventional production, which sounds surprisingly good. Take a listen here.

Meanwhile, Metallica is working on their new album which Kirk Hammett said is about “25 to 30 percent” done. The band will headline Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 1. Check out all their tour dates here.
