Last night, Metallica kicked off their string of intimate 30th anniversary shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco, Calif., in smashing fashion featuring a never before heard track and several special guest appearances throughout the show.

The first of four ‘fan club members only’ shows lived up to expectations in celebration of the band’s ’30 Years Strong.’ Metallica had a very special surprise in store for fans when they introduced the song ‘Hate Train,’ a previously unreleased track from the brainstorming sessions for ‘Death Magnetic.’ Listen to the track below.

The band powered through a set list of 20 songs over three hours, focusing more on rarities and deep tracks as opposed to the hits. The surprises including the first live performance of ‘Carpe Diem Baby’ as well as an acoustic version of the Nazareth cover ‘Please Don’t Judas Me.’

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted joined the band onstage for ‘Harvester of Sorrow’ and ‘Damage, Inc.’ Other special guests included Apocalyptica, John Marshall of Metal Church (and former Metallica guitar tech) as well as Sean Harris and Brian Tatler from Diamond Head.

With three shows still on tap, it looks like anything could happen! James Hetfield reportedly told The Pulse of Radio that he’s hoping Ozzy Osbourne or Lemmy Kilmister make guest appearances, so even though they set the bar pretty high last night, looks like they have a lot of surprises up their sleeves for the remaining shows.

For fans not able to score tickets, you can purchase professionally mixed recordings of each show here.
