Metallica’s James Hetfield Joined by Billie Joe Armstrong + Joe Satriani at Acoustic Benefit

We’re used to seeing Metallica rock out live, so it was quite a sight to check out frontman James Hetfield not only without the thunderous backing of his band, but also unplugging for an acoustic benefit. Hetfield was part of an all-star lineup for the ‘Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit at San Francisco’s Fillmore Thursday night (May 15), where he performed a four-song set and returned for the finale.

Heftield first trotted out ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and later pulled out ‘Until It Sleeps’ from Metallica’s catalog, but he also ventured outside his comfort zone performing The Beatles‘ ‘In My Life’ (which he also performed with Metallica at the MusiCares event on Monday) and joined Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong and Chickenfoot‘s Joe Satriani for a medley of ‘Turn the Page’ and Green Day’s ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams.’ Fan shot footage of the medley can be seen above, while the other songs appear below.

At the end of the night, Hetfield joined host Sammy Hagar, who put on the event through his Hagar Family Foundation, for an all-star jam of Bob Dylan‘s ‘Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.’ Among those participating in the finale were Hetfield, Armstrong, Satriani, Heart‘s Nancy Wilson and Train’s Pat Monahan. Fan shot footage can be seen below.

The event is expected to be a yearly fundraiser. Proceeds from Thursday night’s show benefitted the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
