Metallica Named ‘Artists in Residence’ at Mill Valley Film Festival

Metallica
Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire

At last year’s Mill Valley Film Festival, Metallica had their first public screening of their movie ‘Through the Never.’ This year, the band will be Artists in Residence, with each band member hosting a film that they have selected. This year’s festival runs from Oct. 2 through Oct. 12.

Metallica says, “Last year we kicked off the festival with the first public screening of ‘Through The Never;’ this year we will each be hosting a film that we’ve selected that is significant to us personally. The festival is now is now in it’s 37th year and annually welcomes more than 200 filmmakers, representing more than 50 countries during the eleven-day event and we’re excited to play a role in it.”

Band members will introduce each of their film choices, take questions and in some instances will be joined by the filmmakers. Guitarist and horror aficionado Kirk Hammett kicks off Metallica’s participation with the Oct. 3 screening of the 1971 movie ‘Dracula vs. Frankenstein.’

Bassist Rob Trujillo will present his own project ‘Jaco,’ the documentary about legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. In addition to the Oct. 6 screening of the film that Trujillo co-produced, there will also be a live music event featuring Trujillo and Hammett along with Rodrigo y Gabriela, Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction and others.

Drummer Lars Ulrich‘s choice is ‘Whiplash,’ a film about an aspiring drummer and his ruthless teacher that won multiple awards at Sundance this year. Following the film, director/screenwriter Damien Chazelle will join Ulrich on stage for a conversation and Q&A. The screening will be Oct. 7.

Frontman James Hetfield has selected the classic ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.’ That screening will be Oct. 8. For more details on those screenings and the entire film festival, go here. Tickets for the post-‘Jaco’ musical event are sold separately. For all the info, visit this site.
